Ecotech: Why does Steyr use two different technologies? CEGR is the best solution for customers with small, light duty engines, where space is a real constraint and engine size wouldn’t make relevant fuel savings. By providing more power and better fuel economy, SCR is the best solution for medium and heavy-duty diesel engines. What does the Steyr SCR system include? An AdBlue tank; DEF supply module to move AdBlue from the tank to the injector; an injector that meters AdBlue into the exhaust system; an SCR chamber/muffler where AdBlue mixes with exhaust gas and reacts to form nitrogen vapour and water vapour; and a NOx sensor to measure the amount of NOx leaving the SCR chamber. What’s AdBlue? AdBlue, also referred to as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), is 32.5 percent automotive grade urea and de-ionized water. AdBlue helps convert NOx into harmless water vapor and nitrogen vapour. What does it take to keep my SCR system running? Refill the AdBlue tank during regular refueling – each refill lasts through two tanks of fuel – or when you’re checking fluid levels. While farmers are used to keeping tanks full, a warning light also will signal that your AdBlue tank is running low. Do I need to upgrade my Steyr Tier 3 tractor? No. All tractors manufactured before the Tier 4 transition are exempt from new EPA/EU Tier 4 regulations. A Steyr Tier 3 engine can’t be converted to a Tier 4 SCR system. Where can I buy AdBlue? Steyr dealers will stock AdBlue in several different container sizes. An on-farm bulk storage unit also will be available. AdBlue is already sold at many truck stop chains, fuel stations, trucking companies and agriculture co-ops. It will become even more widely available as manufacturers prepare for the final EPA Tier 4B/EU Stage 4 emissions standards. A link can be found at steyr-traktoren.com where you can find DEA distribution outlets in your area. What do I do when AdBlue freezes? The freezing point is -11°C/12°F, and AdBlue will gel below - 4°C/25°F. Regulations require an SCR system to function within 30 minutes after the engine starts, but it takes the Steyr SCR less time than that to defrost. Once the engine warms the AdBlue tank, it won’t be affected by freezing temperatures. With a Steyr SCR system you might not even know the AdBlue tank is frozen because the tractor will operate normally with no power loss. How long can I store AdBlue? Properly stored, AdBlue will last about 36 months. Will mud and debris affect SCR? No. Unlike EGR, which uses an easy to plug particulate filter, the Steyr SCR system is designed to meet the demands of rugged agriculture and heavy construction applications. |
